MiCrown® 5D Crown and Bridge Pathway
MiCrown® 5D is West Perth Dental Centre’s structured approach to crowns and bridges: Diagnose, Design, Detail, Deliver and Defend.
Rather than viewing a crown as a standalone product, the MiCrown® pathway considers why the tooth has become damaged, which restorative option may be suitable, how the restoration should be designed and fitted, and how it can be maintained over time.
Benefits of MiCrown® 5D Pathway
Begins with diagnosis
Before recommending a crown, we assess why the tooth has weakened or failed. This may involve reviewing cracks, decay, existing fillings, previous root canal treatment, gum support, symptoms and bite forces.
Considers the available treatment options
A crown is not automatically the right option for every damaged tooth. Depending on the clinical findings, the dentist may discuss a filling, onlay, crown, bridge, implant-related restoration or another treatment pathway.
Plans the restoration around the tooth and bite
Material, shape, fit, appearance, bite, neighbouring teeth and cleaning access are considered as part of the restoration plan.
Includes maintenance after treatment
The pathway continues after the crown or bridge is fitted. Cleaning advice, dental reviews, bite monitoring and protective options may be discussed where clinically appropriate.
What You Need to Know About MiCrown® 5D
Diagnose
The first stage focuses on understanding why the tooth requires attention. The dentist may assess the remaining tooth structure, symptoms, decay risk, gum support, nerve considerations, bite pressure and possible alternatives. The aim is to understand the problem before selecting the restoration.
Design
The restoration is planned around the individual tooth, bite, material requirements, smile and long-term cleaning needs. Digital scans and restorative technology may assist with planning, but clinical assessment determines which treatment and workflow may be suitable.
Detail
Small factors such as the restoration edge, contact with neighbouring teeth, shape, shade, bite and cleaning access may influence how a crown or bridge feels and functions. These details are considered as part of the MiCrown® planning and fitting process.
Deliver
During delivery, the restoration is assessed for seating, contacts, bite, comfort, appearance and cleanability before it is finalised. Patients are also provided with appropriate care instructions and information about any recommended review appointments.
Defend
Crowns and bridges still rely on the health of the supporting tooth, gums and surrounding mouth. Ongoing care may include tailored cleaning advice, hygiene appointments, bite reviews, monitoring for decay or gum concerns, and discussion of a nightguard or splint where indicated.
Situations Where a
MiCrown® Assessment May Be Considered

Cracked or Broken Teeth
A cracked or broken tooth may require assessment of the crack pattern, symptoms, remaining tooth structure and bite forces before treatment options are discussed.

Teeth After Root Canal Treatment
After root canal treatment, the remaining tooth structure may need further restorative assessment. The appropriate option depends on the condition of the tooth and how it carries bite pressure.

Missing Teeth and Bridges
Before a bridge is planned, the dentist assesses the missing-tooth gap, the teeth that may support the bridge, the bite and how the area can be cleaned.

Large or Failing Fillings
A heavily filled tooth may become weakened over time. The dentist can assess whether another filling, an onlay, a crown or another option may be appropriate.

Older Crowns Causing Problems
An existing crown may need review if it has fractured, become loose, begun trapping food, affected the gums or shown signs of decay or wear.

Implant Crowns
Implant crowns may require consideration of the final tooth position, bite, shape, gum emergence, neighbouring teeth, cleaning access and maintenance.
Same-Day Where Suitable,
Staged Where Appropriate
West Perth Dental Centre provides same-day digital crowns for eligible patients through its in-house restorative workflow.
However, same-day treatment may not be suitable for every tooth. Some cases may benefit from additional planning, laboratory stages, provisional restorations or review appointments.
Same-Day Digital Crowns
Selected single-tooth cases may be suitable for digital scanning, in-house design, fabrication and placement during one appointment, subject to clinical assessment.
Staged Restorative Treatment
Staged treatment may be considered for bridges, complex aesthetic cases, multiple restorations, challenging bite conditions or situations requiring additional planning.
The treatment pathway is selected according to the clinical situation, rather than automatically choosing the fastest option.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT MiCrown®
What is MiCrown® 5D?
MiCrown® 5D is West Perth Dental Centre’s structured crown and bridge pathway. The five stages are Diagnose, Design, Detail, Deliver and Defend.
It is a process for assessing, planning, fitting and maintaining crowns and bridges rather than a specific crown material.
Is MiCrown® a special type of crown?
No. MiCrown® is not a type of porcelain, zirconia or ceramic.
The crown material and treatment approach are selected according to the condition of the tooth, its location, bite forces, appearance and other clinical considerations.
Does every broken tooth need a crown?
No. Possible options may include monitoring, a filling, onlay, crown, bridge, implant-related treatment, extraction or another approach.
The appropriate option can only be determined after the dentist examines the tooth and surrounding structures.
Can MiCrown® treatment be completed in one visit?
Some eligible cases may be suitable for a same-day digital crown using West Perth Dental Centre’s in-house workflow.
Other cases may require staged treatment, especially where bridges, multiple teeth, complex aesthetics or bite considerations are involved.
How long can a crown last?
The lifespan of a crown varies between patients.
Factors may include the condition of the supporting tooth, bite forces, grinding or clenching, oral hygiene, decay risk, gum health, crown material and ongoing maintenance. No dental restoration can be guaranteed to last for a particular period.
Can an old crown be replaced?
An old crown can be assessed if it is loose, broken, difficult to clean, trapping food, affecting the gums or showing signs of decay or wear.
The dentist will examine why the existing crown is causing concern before discussing whether replacement or another option may be appropriate.
Do I need a nightguard after receiving a crown?
Not every patient requires a nightguard.
A nightguard or splint may be discussed where there are signs of grinding, clenching, bite overload, repeated fractures or risk to existing dental work. Suitability requires clinical assessment.
How much does MiCrown® treatment cost?
Fees depend on the tooth or area being treated, the type of restoration, material, case complexity, technology used and whether additional treatment is required.
An itemised treatment plan can be provided after your assessment.
